Amichai’s Top 50/18 “Requiem for a Queen”

Congratulations to Queen Elisabeth on the birth of her newest great grandchild, seventh in line for the throne! No disrespect or evil eye upon Her Majesty but today’s song of choice ‘Requiem for a Queen’ is by one of my favorite contemporary composers Jocelyn Pook, created for the recent West End/Broadway hit “King Charles III”.

The Requiem – musical compositions of the Catholic Mass for the Dead, has transcended religious context to provide some of the greatest composers in history a canvas to meditate on mortality and grief. My spiritual awakening in many ways is in thanks to Mozart’s and Verdi’s versions.
When I heard Pook’s version I was deeply moved and return to it often. On days like today.

Tonight Israelis begin to honor the memory of all those who have fallen in wars and as victims of terror since 1948. Palestinians begin to mark their narratives of loss starting with the Naqba.
These are critical and sensitive days to honor the past, sacrifices, pain and the high price of ongoing trauma. Days worthy of many requiems.

These are also days for recognition of both sides of the pain and responsibility towards healing and hope. It is never too late.

“Grant them eternal rest, O Spirit of the World,
and may perpetual light shine on them. On us.”
