In 1995 Brian Eno and U2, under the pseudonym “Passengers” released “Original Soundtracks 1” and album based mostly on fictional movie scores. The only single released was based on an actual documentary film called ‘Miss Sarajevo’, created by Bill Carter about a beauty pageant held in the midst of war-torn Sarajevo. The song features the great Luciano Pavarotti makes a guest vocal appearance. The movie and song were meant to wake people up about what’s going on in the Bosnia and Herzegovina civil war that dismantled Yugoslavia, lasted 3 years and took an estimated 100,000 lives.
I remember hearing it for the first time in 1997 – deeply moved by the echoes of war torn realities and the ability to keep on insisting on normal, beauty pageants, prayers, falling in love, as the bombs fall. Bono calls this his favorite U2 song. And I agree.
