Harvest the words
Can you even begin to estimate the number of words you’ve read this past year? or even daily? It’s inconceivable. More than the stars in the sky or the sand on the beach? just about?
I’ve done a lot of reading this past year. Not just the blessed daily grind of emails and txts and media items, but also a lot of academic articles for school – and a lot of good books.
I try to have a not school or work related book with me at all times.
fiction or historical fiction, biography or great geeky travel journals. on day 5 of the year end harvest I review the books I can recall and honor the inspirations. I also want to send the authors. when possible. a thank you note.
my shortlist of beloved books this year ( in English) includes:
Sacred Trash, and its sister-companion Sisters of Sinai – inspired me to create art and learn more about the Cairo Geniza and the love of books. Shalom Auslander’s WTF novel Hope, A Tragedy got me crying from laughter and horror, Caleb’s Crossing – Geraldine Brooks’ new beautiful novel about the origins of Martha’s Vineyard and the first Native American to study at Harvard , Spiritual-Radical the
many worthy words, ingested now as part of my being. for the record these were all actual books on paper. maybe next year ill come around to e readers…
